"I don't think that technology should ever be a barrier to creativity." Tom Morello
Tom Morello, the guitarist known for his work with Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave, has always been a trailblazer in the music industry. His innovative guitar techniques and unique sound have inspired countless musicians. His journey to finding his signature sound took an unexpected turn when he purchased a guitar that sounded broken. While browsing a local guitar shop, Morello stumbled upon an old, beat-up guitar that caught his eye. Despite its worn appearance and seemingly faulty electronics, he decided to buy it, intrigued by its unique character. This guitar, with its unconventional sound, became a crucial part of Morello's arsenal. He embraced its quirks and imperfections, using them to create the innovative and distinctive tones that would define his career. This experience taught Morello the value of embracing the unexpected and finding beauty in imperfection.
More recently, Morello has taken a DIY approach to recording, embracing simplicity and innovation in his creative process. The recording journey began out of necessity. He found himself without access to a professional studio and decided to use the tools he had at hand. This led him to record 95% of his guitar parts for his latest album, "The Atlas Underground Flood," using the voice memo app on his phone. This unconventional method was inspired by Kanye West, who used a similar technique for recording vocals.
Morello's philosophy is rooted in the belief that technology should never be a barrier to creativity. He emphasizes that capturing ideas quickly and efficiently is more important than using expensive equipment. Morello has always been a proponent of simplicity, often using a Radio Shack cassette player to record his ideas throughout his career. When these cassette players became obsolete, he switched to a similar app on his computer.
Recording Techniques
Morello's recording approach involves several key techniques:
Immediate Recording: Morello believes in recording ideas as soon as they come to mind. This ensures that the essence of the idea is captured before it fades away. He often uses his phone or a simple recording device to achieve this.
Multitracking: Despite his preference for simplicity, he does uses multitracking to layer his guitar parts. This allows him to create complex and rich soundscapes without the need for a professional studio.
Acoustic Beginnings: Many of Morello's riffs start on an acoustic guitar. This approach allows him to develop ideas quietly and refine them before adding electric guitar layers.
Collaboration: Morello values the creativity of other musicians and often collaborates with them as noted in his solo albums shown below. This process adds depth and dimension to his recordings and not only broadens his own horizons but also brings fresh and innovative elements to his music.
Morello's DIY recording approach has allowed him to maintain creative control and stay true to his artistic vision. By embracing simplicity and innovation, Morello has been able to produce high-quality recordings without the constraints of a traditional studio. In an interview, Morello stated, "I don't think that technology should ever be a barrier to creativity. All you need is a way to put it down right now so you remember it." This mindset has enabled him to continue creating music that resonates with fans and pushes the boundaries of what is possible. His philosophy should serve as an inspiration to musicians everywhere, reminding them that great music can be created anywhere, with any tools available and a powerful reminder that the essence of music lies in the ideas and emotions behind it, not in the equipment used to record it.
